Parivahan fancy number portal: step-by-step walkthrough

What is the Parivahan fancy number portal?

The Parivahan fancy number portal is the central government website for reserving "fancy" or "VIP" vehicle registration numbers across most Indian states. It's operated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), and it lives at fancy.parivahan.gov.in.

Browsing is open — you can see today's available numbers and the fee for each one without logging in. Reserving a specific number, however, requires a Parivahan/Vahan account or an Aadhaar e-KYC sign in. We'll cover the full path from "open the site" to "the number is booked" below.

Most Indian states are listed in the Parivahan state dropdown. Several Northeast states and a few UTs aren't — those are handled through their own state Transport Department sites. The full verified list is in a section below.

What you need before you start

The Parivahan portal session times out fast. Have these ready in one browser session so you don't lose progress:

• Vehicle category — two-wheeler, four-wheeler, commercial, etc. The series and fees differ by category.
• RTO jurisdiction — the office that will register your vehicle, usually the one closest to your residential address.
• Your preferred 4-digit number — 9999, 0001, 7777, a birthday, or a numerology match from myfancynumber.com.
• Payment method — UPI, credit or debit card, or net banking all work.
• Phone and email linked to Aadhaar — for OTP verification when you sign in.
• Vehicle invoice details — engine number and chassis number, from your dealer's invoice or VIN sticker.

Step-by-step walkthrough

Step 1: Open the portal

Go to fancy.parivahan.gov.in. The landing page has a "Select State" dropdown at the top. No login is required yet — you can browse first and reserve later.

Step 2: Pick your state

Click the state dropdown and choose from the list. Only states that book fancy numbers through Parivahan appear here; see the next section for the current list.

Step 3: Pick your RTO

After selecting a state, an "RTO" dropdown appears. Choose the office that will handle your vehicle's permanent registration — usually the RTO closest to your address. Each RTO maintains its own pool of available numbers.

Step 4: Browse available numbers

The portal now shows two things:

1. Available series — number ranges like "XX 99 BX 9000–9999" that the RTO is currently issuing.
2. Specific available numbers — individual 4-digit numbers within those series, each with its reservation fee.

Filter by series, or search for a specific 4-digit number you have in mind. Premium numbers (single digits like 1 and 9, repeaters like 9999 and 7777, palindromes like 1221) carry higher fees; common numbers go at the base rate.

Step 5: Click "Reserve" on your chosen number

Clicking "Reserve" prompts you to log in. New users have two paths:

• Create a Parivahan account with phone + email + OTP. Takes 2–3 minutes.
• Sign in via Aadhaar e-KYC — faster, recommended if your phone is Aadhaar-linked. Authenticates via OTP to your Aadhaar-linked mobile.

After logging in, the selected number is held in your "cart" for a short window. The clock is now ticking — move quickly through the remaining steps.

Step 6: Enter vehicle and applicant details

The reservation form asks for:

• Engine number and chassis number (from your dealer invoice)
• Owner name and address (must match Aadhaar)
• Mobile number and email for confirmations

Double-check the engine and chassis numbers before proceeding — mismatches cause problems at the RTO later.

Step 7: Pay the reservation fee

The portal redirects to the payment gateway. Most banks, cards, and UPI apps work. After successful payment, you'll get a transaction receipt — save it. You'll need this receipt at the RTO when you complete vehicle registration.

Step 8: Wait for confirmation

Parivahan emails and SMSes a reservation confirmation, usually within minutes. The reservation is valid for a fixed window — commonly a few weeks — during which you must complete the vehicle's permanent registration at the same RTO. The exact expiry date appears on the reservation receipt; do not miss it.

Which states use Parivahan?

The list below is from the live Parivahan state dropdown (verified May 2026). 28 states and union territories are currently listed:

• States: Andhra Pradesh (AP), Bihar (BR), Chhattisgarh (CG), Goa (GA), Gujarat (GJ), Haryana (HR), Himachal Pradesh (HP), Jharkhand (JH), Karnataka (KA), Kerala (KL), Madhya Pradesh (MP), Maharashtra (MH), Manipur (MN), Odisha (OR), Punjab (PB), Rajasthan (RJ), Sikkim (SK), Tamil Nadu (TN), Telangana (TG), Uttar Pradesh (UP), Uttarakhand (UK), West Bengal (WB).
• Union Territories: Andaman & Nicobar Islands (AN), Chandigarh (CH), Jammu and Kashmir (JK), Ladakh (LA), Puducherry (PY), UT of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu (DD).

Not currently on Parivahan (use the state Transport Department site instead): Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Delhi, Lakshadweep, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura.

Common issues and how to fix them

"Session expired" before checkout

Parivahan's session timeout is short — often 15–20 minutes. Spending too long browsing kicks you back to login and clears your cart.

Fix: shortlist the number you want on myfancynumber.com first, then log into Parivahan and reserve in one pass.

Payment debited but reservation doesn't show

Occasionally the bank confirms payment, but Parivahan's confirmation webhook doesn't fire — leaving you in limbo.

Fix: wait 30 minutes for the retry. If the reservation still doesn't show, confirm the debit with your bank, then file a ticket on the Parivahan helpdesk citing your transaction ID. Refunds for failed reservations are usually issued, but the specific number slot may not be held during the gap.

Captcha keeps failing

The image-based captcha is notoriously hard to read on some displays.

Fix: refresh the captcha (small reload icon next to the input). If totally stuck, try a different browser — Firefox and Chrome render the captcha font slightly differently. A high-DPI desktop display tends to work better than a small phone screen.

Empty RTO dropdown after picking state

Some RTOs are temporarily offline for data sync, and some aren't onboarded onto Parivahan yet.

Fix: check our state directory to see if we have current data for the RTO. If we do and Parivahan doesn't, the RTO likely accepts fancy number requests via direct office visit instead of through the portal — call them to confirm.

After you've reserved

The reservation lives for a fixed window stated on the receipt. Complete the vehicle's permanent registration at the same RTO before that date. Bring:

• The Parivahan reservation receipt (printed or on phone)
• Vehicle invoice and temporary registration certificate
• Address proof and photo ID
• Insurance certificate and PUC certificate

The RTO links your reserved number to the vehicle, prints the permanent registration certificate, and issues the number plate order. Total trip is usually under an hour if your paperwork is complete.
